The Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC) celebrated Olympic Day on Saturday, June 24th 2017, marking the 123rd anniversary of the Founding of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), with the observance of Olympic Day under the theme, “Move, Learn and Discover”.
This year’s event took place from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. with participants of all ages gathering at the Tourist Reception Terminal on the Dame Eugenia Charles Boulevard from 2:00 p.m. It began with the traditional Run/Walk and will be followed by a demonstration of sporting activities at display booths along the boulevard by various national sporting associations. This includes Fencing, Basketball, Boxing, Football, Cycling, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Basketball and Athletics. Preceding the event, the message of IOC President, Mr. Thomas Bach, will be read by the President of the DOC, Mr. Billy Doctrove. In addition, DJ services were utilized and participants got the opportunity to have their face painted.
This event was open to all age groups. Wheelchair-bound members and cyclist were also invited to participate since the route was modified to suit everyone.
